🌿 Fragrances of Ancient Egypt

A Mini-Series Exploring Scent, Ritual, and Identity

Scent was never just an afterthought in ancient Egypt—it was a language. A prayer. A boundary between the seen and unseen. It marked sacred time, purified bodies, honored the gods, and expressed identity in both life and death.

This three-part mini-series accompanies my hands-on class and olfactory workshop, Fragrances of Ancient Egypt, and is designed for anyone who wants to explore these topics more deeply. Whether you’ve already attended the class and are looking for extended resources—or you haven’t yet had the opportunity to join—this series offers a richly researched journey into how fragrance shaped ancient Egyptian life.

Each article stands on its own, but together they form a complete sensory landscape:

🪔 Part I – Scentscapes of Ancient Egypt

Travel through the five olfactory environments of Egyptian experience: home, garden, marketplace, temple, and tomb. Each space had its own scent profile and ritual logic—scent structured both space and meaning.

🌸 Part II – Perfumes of the Pharaohs

Delve into the sacred art of perfume-making, from named formulas like Mendesian and Susinum to the oils, vessels, and rituals of daily and divine life. Includes fully reconstructed ancient recipes and modern equivalents used in class.

🌫️ Part III – Sacred Smoke

Follow the trail of incense through temple offerings, kyphi preparation, and funerary rites. Learn how resins and sacred smoke were used to communicate with gods and uphold the order of the universe.

Throughout the series, you’ll find:

  • Historical and textual sources
  • Visuals of ingredients, tools, and vessels
  • Experimental archaeology and recreated recipes
  • Expanded content from my classroom materials
  • A guide for students and curious readers alike

This series is grounded in archaeological evidence, primary texts, linguistic analysis, and years of research shared through workshops, classes, and immersive SCA presentations.

If scent is your gateway to understanding the ancient world—this series is for you.
